“So here is our story…”

First question we are always asked, when our guests arrive, is “how did you end up in France”.
So here is our story…….. We always had a love for Europe, and had been wanting to move here for at least the last 10 years. Every year we would go on vacation and talk about it, and every year time would just tick by. In 2008 we where at a crossroad in our career and our life, and said here is our chance to change it all.

So we booked an eight week trip to travel all over Europe in hopes of finding a way to rediscover ourselves. Six weeks into our trip we came to the Dordogne, and stayed with Paul and Jeri at La Borie des Combes. They were such wonderful hosts, and really helped us enjoy our time in the area. By the end of the week we were in love with the Dordogne, and had two new friends. We went back to Florida thinking WOW, we think we found our dream of a new life. Then we got home and another year ticked by. Then in the summer of 2009 we looked at each other again and said ok this is it now or never. So we booked another eight week trip and decided to stay one month in France, and the second month in Greece. We finally decided we were moving and it was going to be either France or Greece.

We have always loved Greece and with George being born in Greece and fluent in the language,it made sense. But then there was France, and it was calling our name. We thought, is it just a vacation high or does it really feel like home. We had travelled most of France in 2008, but had missed Brittany and Normandy. So we decided to go there first when we arrived in France. Both areas were beautiful, but didn’t make us feel like home. Then we headed to the Dordogne, for a second look, and as soon as we drove into the area, we looked at each other and said this feels like home. Of course we went back to La Borie des Combes, and stayed with our new friends Paul and Jeri. Then the hunt began, and we started looking at houses. Les Hirondelles was the fourth house we saw, and when we walked in the door we knew it was home and the rest is history.

Of course the second question everyone asks is what happened to Greece? We still went and made a vacation out of it, but it never felt like home. Now that we live in Europe we can travel to Greece anytime we want, but France is now our home.

What our guests are saying about Les Hirondelles

“Perfect base from which to explore the Dordogne!”

July 2016

“Having just returned from our honeymoon in the Dordogne region, my wife and I found the Butterfly Cottage!  A fabulous retreat from which to set our own pace for exploring the Dordogne.

The hosts Linda and George could not have been more helpful in providing tips, maps, and even helping to make bookings in French for activities for us over the phone. The cottage is situated within truly lovely grounds, with the view from the pool and Jacuzzi every bit as stunning as the pictures might suggest.

All the facilities you could possibly require are in the cottage, and Linda and George really go the extra mile to ensure every little touch is covered: you don’t need to worry about coming with milk, spices, cleaning products and such because their attitude of providing their guests with everything they could need from the start of their holiday has all that covered. We also really enjoyed getting regular fresh eggs from the 14 on-site “ladies” (chickens!). We had an absolutely fantastic time here and were made to feel so welcome.

We wholeheartedly recommend it to everyone, and plan to return ourselves in the future.”
